THIS IS WHAT I BELEAVE MAKES A LEADER

What makes for a great leader? Are leaders born, what qualities make a leader? Leaders have a clear vision of where they want to go and what they want to do. A leader needs to have self confidents and motivation. A leader must be strong because every dream has obsticles and to overcome those obsticles you need to be strong. My mom once told me, that to be a leader you must have stick- to- it -ness because some obsticles might make you want to quite. That's the one thing you don't wanna do. A leader also needs courage, A man named Norman Schwarzkof once said. True courage is being afraid, and going ahead and doing the job any way. To me this means to not get distracted by others and do what you have to do. Look at the saying again then think to your self what dose this mean to you?

  1. Do you have to be born with leadership skills or is it something you can learn? I would like to think that it is possible to learn it. I think some people are born into a position that gives them greater access but other people seem to rise to positions of leadership through adversity and cahllenges.

  2. I think that Gen. Schwarzkof's quote, while probably based on his military background, is very appropriate for all types of jobs. I teach teachers how to use technology. When I walk into a room full of teachers, I need to know as much as possible about what I'm teaching them. If I'm supposed to be an expert at say, blogging, I had better be able to answer their questions about how to make a blog and some examples of what good blogs look like. If someone says, "Hey, I want to know more about this," I may be afraid that I won't be able to help them, but I am confident enough that I'll can learn a lot about the technology tool by playing with it and then sharing what I know with them.
    Great post and thoughts!

  3. The wisdom from your mother is interesting and a critical piece for you as a leader. As a leader, you are going to be in a position where no matter how well-thought out, no matter how much you collaborate and take into consideration as many perspectives as possible, you'll make a decision that some will not agree with and potentially even be frustrated with you.

Leaders must have conviction and belief that the decisions and path creations are done with the best interest of those we serve. After all, good leadership is servant leadership but this also means we have to make tough decisions that require us to have that "stick to it ness" and inspire others to greatness.

As John Quincy Adams said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." So, the question for you as a growing leader, are you inspiring others to be greater?

Finally, as you ponder the qualities of leadership, you might find this world depiction from our students interesting: http://tinyurl.com/yl5bfey

There are some interesting ideas that parallel your thinking.

Keep thinking! Keep Challenging! Keep Learning! After all, leadership is learning.

  4. I like that at your age, you are already contemplating leadership. I think you are spot on in stating that a leader needs to get beyond his or her own fears and the obstacles to achieve his or her goal. I also believe that a true leader has integrity. To me, this means that they are honest, ethical, and focused on what is best for the people that they lead.
